About This Trawler

Long range passage maker with raised pilothouse

Overview

Peking was commissioned to provide her original owners with safe global navigation capabilities, including extreme ice latitudes. She has successfully completed over 8,000 nautical miles of cruising. A very desirable Diesel Duck, she has been featured in prestigious magazines and honored with the People's Choice award at TrawlerFest. For those with oceanic aspirations, the Diesel Duck designs are renowned for their heavy steel construction and exceptional stability in all sea conditions. Peking is equipped with paravane outriggers with steel stabilizer "fish", significantly enhancing stability for ocean passages. Numerous DD-462 vessels have successfully completed multiple ocean crossings and circumnavigations. On deck, she is easy to move about along expansive walk-around decks, bordered by high bulwarks and robust steel railings, ensuring safe access on deck in serious weather conditions. The Diesel Duck designs are steel hull recreational trawlers. They are engineered to withstand high waves and slice through heavy seas with their wave-cresting bow design. Unique to George Buehler, the designer is the versatile concept of a sail-assist trawler - having a reliable main engine to power along, but using her distinctive sail plan for quiet offshore travel and to provide emergency secondary propulsion. Peking is a remarkably fuel-efficient full displacement hull. Her cruise speed typically consumes only one-gallon-per-hour. This matched with her substantial 2,000-gallon fuel capacity allows for thousands of miles of non-stop passage making. Peking was constructed with a watertight bulkhead in the bow that is secured with commercial ship quality, dogged-down hatches. Four commercial, dogged-down aluminum doors in the interior create watertight compartments throughout. The raised pilothouse features a panoramic view in all directions with seating and a dining. The interior layout comfortably accommodates one to four individuals, with built-in seating and settee configurations suitable for entertaining larger groups. This is a two-stateroom, two-head layout below decks.

On Deck

The lower swim platform, equipped with tender access and a swim ladder, serves as an excellent location for fishing and vessel entry/exit. The ship's tender is securely supported by stainless steel davits off the stern. The foredeck is outfitted with a professional-grade ground tackle system, including an electric horizontal windlass and dual anchors ready for deployment. On deck the main and mizzen mast have roller furling sails and the rigging includes paravane outriggers.

Pilothouse

Access to the pilothouse is available from both the aft cockpit and the starboard side deck. There is exceptional visibility in all directions, facilitated by large opening windows on the sides and aft. The pilothouse features a chart table with storage to starboard, while a spacious U-shaped settee with a table to port provides dining accommodations and converts to a single berth. The helm area, situated forward to starboard, is equipped with a state-of-the-art Garmin MFD nav/com system, newly installed in 2024.

Saloon

Descending five steps past the ship's electrical panel to starboard brings you to the saloon. There is a convertible settee to starboard, a custom chair to port, and a built-in office desk. The saloon is illuminated by opening portlights and a distinctive butterfly hatch in the forward overhead.

Forward Head and Stateroom

Forward to port lies the wet head, comprising a toilet and shower, directly opposite the separate laundry area. The guest stateroom, located all of the way forward, features two bunk beds outboard to starboard, with a privacy curtain available to screen off this section.

Galley

The galley, situated aft of the saloon along the port side, is well-appointed with a double basin sink, granite countertops, a Force 10 oven and three-burner propane cooktop, microwave oven, Norcold refrigerator/freezer, complete with lockers and drawers.

Engine Room

The engine room features 6-foot ceilings, convenient walk-around access to the engine, generator, and workbench. All components are readily accessible without the need for uncomfortable positioning. A fuel polishing system maintains fuel quality in all tanks while underway or at anchor.

Owner Stateroom

Aft of the galley, beyond the spacious, walk-around engine room, is the owner stateroom with queen-sized bed, en-suite head and shower and hanging lockers on both port and starboard sides.

Broker Comments

Following two and a half years of construction and commissioning in China, Peking's original owner embarked on a 15-year journey along the east coast, Caribbean, Central America, through the Panama Canal and up to San Francisco. In 2024, the vessel was acquired by a new owner who relocated it to Alaska in preparation for a Northwest Passage expedition. During his ownership, he implemented significant upgrades, including a new heating system, solar and lithium power systems, and advanced navigation equipment. A new autopilot motor was installed, and many new parts were purchased as backups. The new owner has also installed an oil/generator "Reverso" oil changing system and all new LED lights for the mast and navigation. Regrettably, due to unforeseen circumstances, the current owner has listed Peking for sale in Ketchikan, Alaska. Peking is fueled and equipped with numerous recent improvements, ready for immediate sailing.
